FreeBSD Storage Summit, February 22nd, 2016

This page is for registering and recording ideas for a FreeBSD Storage Summit, coinciding with USENIX's FAST '16 event, on February 22nd, 2016 in Santa Clara, California.

This is a by-invitation event. FreeBSD committers are welcome to register by adding their names to the table on this page; non-committers must be sponsored by a committer to attend. If you would like to attend but need a sponsor, contact <gibbs AT FreeBSDFoundation DOT org>.

Event Description

With flash dropping in price and phase-change memory on the horizon, FreeBSD's storage subsystems need to change so they perform well with these low-latency devices. How should CAM, GEOM, I/O scheduling, unmapped I/O, and storage APIs change to meet this challenge? During the FreeBSD Storage Summit, small working groups will focus on discussing these and other pressing concerns, propose solutions, and document ideas/decisions/roadmaps on the FreeBSD wiki.

In addition, a panel of networking specialists will provide their ideas and experience on topics that are equally relevant to storage and networking. Do we need to change the application model for low-latency and multi-Q I/O? Are there any examples of old coding idioms that worked well in the past, but just don't scale now? How do we deal with object lifetime issues in a scalable way (e.g. a virtual interface or ZFS volume disappears)? How has multi-Q impacted the design of the networking stack and should the I/O stack follow suit? This will hopefully encourage collaboration and a unified approach where it makes sense.

Costs and Registration

All attendees must register using the online registration system and pay a $75 fee to help offset venue, A/V, and catering costs.

The FreeBSD Foundation Travel Grant Policy is available for those needing financial assistance to be able to attend this event.

Working Groups

The working group sessions are intended to get contributors with common areas of interest or specific projects in mind together for collaboration and hacking. Working group attendees are asked to research the topic advance to maximize the effectiveness of our time together.

Each working group will provide a short summary of their results during the closing session.

Interested in leading a session? Submit your proposal (short abstract and list of required materials - e.g. whiteboard, large note pad, etc.) to <gibbs AT FreeBSDFoundation DOT org>.
