2018 Linuxhotel Hackathon and DevSummit

There will be a Hackathon / DevSummit 10 - 12th of August 2018 in the Linuxhotel Villa Vogelsang in Essen, Germany. This event is conveniently placed before BSDCam, so developers who are travelling to Europe can come a few days earlier, spend the weekend hacking, and then head to Cambridge. Note that this is optional and each event can be visited separately or just one of them.

Maps

Map of Linuxhotel and surrounding area.

Linuxhotel

Linuxhotel Villa Vogelsang is a hotel inside of a historical mansion. It is regarded as "one of the most unusual hotels in the Ruhr area". The nine guest rooms and suites as well as two meeting and seminar rooms are equipped with extensive technical facilities to conduct meetings and seminars on the topics of Linux and free software. The hotel and seminar rooms and the surrounding park are networked via Ethernet and wireless LAN.

During work days the Linuxhotel offers Linux and free software courses (e.g. FreeBSD, OpenBSD, pf, etc).

The venue and surrounding area offers a lot of activities for partners and children, so consider bringing them along to spend the weekend there.

Logistics

The Linuxhotel is located in the city of Essen. The next airports are Düsseldorf (DUS), Köln/Bonn (CGN) and Dortmund (DTM). Frankfurt/Main (FRA) is also an option, although a bit further south. From there you can reach Essen by train. Use this page (Google translate) to check how to get there. Contact lme@ for details.

A note on trains: Avoid the Cologne area, especially the Fair (German: Köln Messe). Many (but not all) trains from FRA go this way, but the ticket prices are astronomically high during this season. Try a route via Dortmund and take another train from there to Essen. Check the map on the Deutsche Bahn website to see which route the train is taking.

Accommodation

The Linuxhotel offers a maximum of 27 beds for accommodation. There are some single rooms but there are also double rooms for share.

Weekend activities

Non-exhaustive list of some non-FreeBSD activities (for families, significant others):

Network access

Wireless all around the hotel and park, wired Ethernet in all hotel rooms, seminar rooms and even in the park. ;-)

Power

Germany uses CEE 7 standards and Europlug: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_power_plugs_and_sockets#CEE_7_standards_and_Europlug

Munch, Munch

Breakfast

Available at the hotel from 09:00 to 10:00.

Lunches

On Saturday and Sunday we can order pizza or Doener for lunch or have barbecue in the park if the weather is good.

Dinner places

Depending on the arrival time of the participants we plan to do a welcome BBQ in the park when the weather is good on Friday evening.

In case of bad weather there's a restaurant which offers home cooking (i.e., solid, plain, but tasty meals like Schnitzel, etc.): http://www.hausgrossjung.de/

Most people seem to leave on Sunday afternoon, but we'll make sure that you get some kind of lunch before leaving.

Travel coordination / Attendee list

Developers are welcome to invite guests to attend the developer summit, subject to their tolerance for ceaseless hours of kernel-hacking and availability of space at the venue.

Note: the rooms will be available at 6pm on Friday. If you arrive early, you can spend the time either in the park or in the chimney room. Power outlets and Wifi are available.

Room coordination

There are only a limited number of rooms, mostly twin and 3 bed rooms. The following is a preliminary room list.
