FreeBSD Developer Summit, September, 2022

This page describes the September 2022 FreeBSD Developer Summit, colocated with EuroBSDCon 2022, which takes place in Vienna, Austria. This is a by-invitation event. FreeBSD committers will be welcome to register themselves using this wiki; non-committers must be sponsored by a committer to attend. Attendees must also attend EuroBSDcon 2022 in order to access all devsummit activities.

Health & Safety

This is the first developer summit after two years of Covid-19 outbreak. We're slowly trying to get back an in-person summit. However, we can't predict the future and how the travel situation will be in September. Make sure that you book travel and accomodation with an option to cancel at the last minute in case we can't safely do the summit at all. We will notify you here about any requirements regarding personal safety, which includes wearing a mask at the venue, practicing personal distancing, and other measures to protect you and other attendees. See this Covid-19 measures announcement message from the EuroBSDcon organizers, which also applies to the devsummit. We hope to balance safety and comfort for attendees under these circumstances and ask for your understanding if things are not running as smooth as you've been used to at past devsummits like this.

Travel

Most people from abroad will want to fly in to Vienna (VIE) directly. There are plenty of connections available. From the airport, you can either get a taxi or Uber to your destination. Frankfurt (FRA) may also be a good international travel destination, with only a short hop to take from there to VIE. Comparing prices and booking early is advisable.

Attendees from neighboring countries may consider train travel or even driving to Vienna. Please consider the extra cost for parking at the hotel (if offered) and that finding a parking post in a major city is always difficult.

Vienna is a lovely city with plenty of things to see, eat, and drink. The inner city is very walkable, especially around the conference venue.

Schedule

The FreeBSD developer summit takes place on the 15th and 16th of September 2022 on the same days as the EuroBSDCon tutorials. Many developers will arrive on the night of the 14th and meet for dinner and drinks before things kick off. Most developers will stay on through EuroBSDCon to give and attend talks. It is an excellent conference--a good FreeBSD developer showing has countless benefits, not least the opportunity to tell the world what we're doing.

How (writing for) the FreeBSD Journal works.

BenedictReuschling

We will describe how easy it is to become an author for the FreeBSD Journal. The process, the people, and how you can contribute (write about the stuff you love working with) is explained. A track record of publications in a technical journal has many benefits and we illustrate some of them.

It is time to review the guide. We should remove some old bits (e.g., remaining Subversion references), perhaps update sections which describe our workflows and customs, and so on.

Dinners

A devsummit dinner will take place on the first day at https://www.undflora.at at 19:00. If you want to attend, let dch@ know about it by Tuesday, Sept. 13 (evening). Also let him know about any special food requirements (i.e. vegetarian) for you (tasty food is a given). The place is within walking distance of the venue. You pay for your own drinks, the food is sponsored by: Modirum and Skunkwerks GmbH. Big thanks to our sponsors!

Location: Breite Gasse 9, 1070 Vienna

Attendees

In order to attend, you must register in advance; this allows us to size rooms, order food, and provide beverages. We appreciate your cooperation in letting us know your plans well in advance of the event. Non-committers must be sponsored by a committer in order to attend. Due to increased attendance in recent years, companies are limited to one non-committer unless permission is explicitly granted by the organizers. Registration will start in June 2022.

Developer Attendees

Please register for the conference on https://2022.eurobsdcon.org/registration/ and buy the appropriate FreeBSD devsummit tickets.
