Getting to Halifax
The Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is the largest airport in Atlantic Canada. There are direct flights to and from Canadian, American, and European cities.
Getting from the airport to downtown
Public Transportation
The Regional Express 320 bus service costs $4.75 one-way. You can either pay with cash (exact change required) or install the HFXGO, Halifax Transit's Mobile Fare Payment App. The bus stops at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, Fall River, Downtown Dartmouth, and Downtown Halifax. Schedule.
Taxi
Taxis are available for a fixed rate, but expect to pay around $60 to get to downtown.
Car Rental
Car rentals are available at the airport. Available rental companies include Alamo/National, Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Enterprise and Hertz.
Accommodations
Dalhousie University has summer accomodations. There is probably only one residence available, Risley Hall. That's a good option because it's a short walk to the building where the hackathon will take place. Make sure you don't pick a residence in Truro; that's a town about 100 km away. A 7-night stay from June 21-28 is CAD $554.40 for a room with one bed, or CAD $989.10 for a room with two beds. Students get a 25% discount, and seniors get a 10% discount. We are still hoping to get an event discount, butI recommend booking now (2026-03-13).
Halifax has many downtown hotels and hostels within a 20-minute walk of the hackathon venue. Here are a few:
- Upscale
The Lord Nelson Hotel & Suites
- The Prince George Hotel Halifax
- The Westin Nova Scotian
- Moderately Priced
- Atlantica Hotel Halifax
- Cambridge Suites Hotel Halifax
- Courtyard by Marriott Halifax Downtown
- Hostel
- HI Halifax Heritage House
Power
120V 60Hz. Electrical plugs/outlets: NEMA 1-15 (Type A) and NEMA 5-15 (Type B).
Social
The current plan is to hack during the day, and then have smaller social activities at lunch and possibly in the evenings. We will also have a larger social event on one evening or the weekend following the hackathon.
Lunchtime social activities
- Walking tour along the Halifax boardwalk
- Short tour on the harbour ferry
- Tour of the Halifax Public Gardens
- Museums
Weekend Social Activity
Possibilities:
Rafting on the Shubenacadie River. The Bay of Fundy claims to have the largest tides in the world. This creates a tidal bore with rapids.
A day trip to either Peggy's Cove or Lunenburg.
Hiking on trails close to the city or trails farther away.
An ocean tour. Those who have extra time and want a better chance of seeing whales could plan their own whale watching trip to Brier Island.
People who are very adventurous could take their own trip to Cape Breton Island. To make this worthwhile, plan for more than a weekend.
Please let me know your preferred weekend social activity.
