Getting to Halifax

The Halifax Robert L. Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is the largest airport in Atlantic Canada. There are direct flights to and from Canadian, American, and European cities.

Getting from the airport to downtown

Public Transportation

The Regional Express 320 bus service costs $4.75 one-way. You can either pay with cash (exact change required) or install the HFXGO, Halifax Transit's Mobile Fare Payment App. The bus stops at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, Fall River, Downtown Dartmouth, and Downtown Halifax. Schedule.

Taxi

Taxis are available for a fixed rate, but expect to pay around $60 to get to downtown.

Car Rental

Car rentals are available at the airport. Available rental companies include Alamo/National, Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Enterprise and Hertz.

Accommodations

Dalhousie University has summer accomodations. There is probably only one residence available, Risley Hall. That's a good option because it's a short walk to the building where the hackathon will take place. Make sure you don't pick a residence in Truro; that's a town about 100 km away. A 7-night stay from June 21-28 is CAD $554.40 for a room with one bed, or CAD $989.10 for a room with two beds. Students get a 25% discount, and seniors get a 10% discount. We are still hoping to get an event discount, butI recommend booking now (2026-03-13).

Halifax has many downtown hotels and hostels within a 20-minute walk of the hackathon venue. Here are a few:

Power

120V 60Hz. Electrical plugs/outlets: NEMA 1-15 (Type A) and NEMA 5-15 (Type B).

Social

The current plan is to hack during the day, and then have smaller social activities at lunch and possibly in the evenings. We will also have a larger social event on one evening or the weekend following the hackathon.
